Purpose of Shoreline Plants for a Pond

Question: What is the purpose of shoreline plants for a pond or lake?

Answer: Shoreline plants have some aesthetic value, particularly if you plant the right types of plants. A lot of your pickerel, sagittaria, blue flag iris produce blooms, and those blooms are seasonal so it’s almost like a garden right along your pond edge. The primary reason for putting those plants in is to convert nutrients that are stored in that pond. So the plants will use the nutrients and you start the cycle of breakdown.
